Chinese government has donated 5,983 metric tons of rice to Uganda’ government to help feed the starving people who were affected by drought in various parts of the country.
While delivering the rice to the agriculture minister at Serena Hotel Kampala, the Chinese ambassador to Uganda, Zheng Zhu Qiang, revealed that since last year, Chinese government has been greatly concerned about the poor harvest caused by the Elnino in the many African countries of which Uganda is inclusive.
Zheng on behalf of the Chinese government pledged to continue supporting Uganda at all times not only in critical situations.
According to the latest integrated Phase Classification report carried out in January this year, it estimated 10.9 million people in Uganda to be experiencing an acute food insecurity situation while 1.6 million are in a critical situation.
Meanwhile Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja the agriculture minister exhibited gratitude towards the Chinese government before appealing to other donor agencies and countries to also extend a hand to Uganda.
It should be noted that just last week some government officials were agitating for the taxing of this rice hence causing a delay in reaching the country.
