Court grants bail to 7 AIGP Kaweesi murder suspects

Seven out the 14 murder suspects of fallen former police publicist AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi have been released on a non cash bail of 50 million shillings each and each of their 14 sureties executed a 500 million shillings non cash bond.

The suspects through their lawyer Ladislaus Lwakafuuzi asked Nakawa magistrates court to grant them bail on grounds that they had exceeded the mandatory period of six months without being committed to high court for trial.

On granting them bail the trial Nakawa grade one magistrate Noah Sajjabbi informed court that he could not allow injustice in his court because the acused had spent over 180 days in prison because the state is still collecting evidence which is against the law  thus ordered for their immediate release.

The magistrate has however further remanded the 7 others until 23rdNovember 2017, since they have not clocked the 180 days on remand and also promised to release them if government fails to complete it’s investigations beyond the stipulated 180 days.

The law requires that if an accused person is charged with a capital offense and 180 days elapse while on remand without being committed for trial , he or she is entitled to a mandatory release on bail by the magistrates court.
