For the first time ever in the history of Uganda, freelance journalists from various Media houses have formed an association dubbed Federation of Freelance journalists Uganda FJU with a major objective of liberating themselves from the oppression of the security agencies, public, employers and the bitting poverty.
The establishment of the federation which currently has 150 registered members was informed by the poor working conditions at their work places with peanut earnings, Intimidation from the public, unfair treatment from politicians and neglect of duty by the mother organised Uganda Journalists Association UJA headed by Robert Kagolo who the current executive members are considering to impeach on grounds of emblezzlement of funds among others.
According to the National coordinator of this Federation Ali Kizza , the association was started in 2016 though it will be launched in early November this year.
“we started this association in 2016 with the aim of helping the Freelance Journalists Socially,Morally and Economically though the journey has been quite long and difficult but we hope to officially launch the organisation in November” said Kizza
The Organising Secretary of the federation Daniel Mukisa revealed that they want to instill a saving culture amongst journalist.
“journalists are hard workers and intellectuals who lack a saving culture a reason we came up with a Sacco which has helped our members in numerous ways thus we welcome and appeal for support from government, civil societies, media houses and individuals towards our Sacco” said Daniel
The prime minister Rt Hon Dr Ruhakana Rugunda is expected to officiate at the launch of FJU whose offices are located at Yiga chambers along Gaddafi road old Kampala.
