GOV’T DESIGNATES A DAY FOR LABORATORY AS UNHLS GETS AN INT’L ACCREDITATION

With 70% laboratory services constituting the entry point into quality health care by enabling proper Disease diagnosis, monitoring and control, the ministry of health has declared a day in every month to identify challenges in this sub sector, discuss and find solutions to them.
This has been revealed by the Ministry Health permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwiine  while unveiling the International accreditation of the early infant HIV diagnosis EID and Viral load at the Uganda National Health Laboratory services UNHLS in Butabika by South African National Accreditation System SANAS for the next four years putting the laboratory at an international standard.
Diana also revealed that the ministry has embarked on the process to have atleast six more laboratories at regional referral and general hospital accredited by the end of this year including mild may Uganda, Nsambya Hospital, Mbale,fort portal, lira referral and Mulago national hospital adding that the  laboratory day will be held every once a month until the 100 established hubs are fully accredited.
Currently UNHLS is supporting 19 countries in terms of training, sample testing and referral network and since 2012 to 2016 has won seven continental awards for good practices and innovations
This important accreditation that demonstrates technical competency and quality management system in accordance with international standards comes at a time when the bill to make UNHLS autonomous is before parliament.
