With many Ugandans in the country struggling to get their national identity cards and NIN number to enable them register their SIM-CARDS as per directed by Uganda Communication Commission UCC following a meeting with the top security officials where the same was zeroed on as the best measure of curbing criminality, Government has now directed UCC to extend the process to 19th of may this year from the 7 days ultimatum that would see many people off telecommunication waves by tomorrow 20th this month.
In a letter signed by the Prime Minister of Uganda Dr.Ruhakana Rugunda addressed to the Executive Director OF Uganda Communication Commission government extended the ongoing Simcard Verification and validation exercise until 19th may.
“Reference is made to your letter dated 11th April 2017 wherein you directed all telecommunication service providers to verify all sim card subscriber details within 7 days from Wednesday 12 April 2017. You directed all subscribers of telecommunications services must update their sim card registration details using their national identification card number and all sim cards whose details whose details were not updated by Thursday 20th april 2017 would be disconnected” read the letter in parts
“The government has reviewed the said timelines and taken a decision that the ongoing simcard verification exercise should be extended to the 19th may 2017” directed the letter
The directive comes with just hours left for the high court to pronounce its self on whether it issues an injunction stopping the sim card verification exercise or not
