GOV’T HAS POWERS TO TAKE OVER PRIVATE LAND, SAYS AMONG

The ministry of lands has come out to clarify on the proposed constitutional amendment in respect to compulsory acquisition of private owned land.
Under the constitutional amendment bill that is before parliament’s legal and parliamentary affairs committee, government is considering amending article 26 to allow faster acquisition of private land where government wants to set up their development projects.
Addressing the media at Uganda media centre on Tuesday, the lands, housing and urban development minister hon.Betty Amongi asserted that the state already has power to acquire land under the land acquisition Act of 1965, but what is lacking is in process of expediting the process of realising the same.
Among said that under the new bill, all gazetted private property will be compensated for however disagreements will be settled in courts of law to allow continuity of the project without interruptions of of court injunctions
