Government is set to close all 100mls bottles, and sachet alcohol manufacturing industries across the country to ensure inaccessibility of such alcohol to the masses specifically youths.
This has been disclosed by the minister of trade, industry and cooperatives Hon. Amelia Kyambadde during the launch of the committee of the implementation of the ban of alcohol packed in sachets.
The minister says according to World Health Organisation (WHO),2018, Uganda was ranked 7th for alcohol consumption in Africa, and ranked 1st in East and central Africa.
In 2018, 1,514 persons got cancer, 2,861 got liver problems , and 3,900 got road accidents due to alcohol consumption.
She asserts that this banned packed alcohol will help to eliminate such problems.
The committee chairperson, Ainebyona Denis, who doubles as the acting commissioner industry and technology said they will work hand in hand with other government ministries and agencies to ensure the ban is fully implemented.
Meanwhile David Kalema, chairperson of Uganda alcohol policy alliance, says there is a need for government to enact and implement new laws to regulate alcohol consumption.
The committee will meet next week at ministry of trade, industry and cooperatives to lay strategies on how the ban will totally be implemented.
