KAMPALA: In the letter dated 13, May 2020 to all staff by the chairman of council and rector to staff indicated that all their contracts had been suspended with immediate effect due to hardship in meeting its financial obligations since the closure of all academic institutions by Government in March, 2020 over the Covid-19 Pandemic.
“Following the Government of Uganda directive on the closure of academic institutions, the university finds itself unable to continue paying staff salaries and meet other financial obligations, because of the sudden and unplanned early closure of the university. Consequently, you are informed that It has been decided that employment contracts for all IUIU staff are suspended indefinitely,” the letter reads in part.
However, while addressing the media at the Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU) main branch Kibuli, the university Rector, Dr. Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo said following the Government’s directives permitting universities to reopen and start teaching of Final Students, the suspension of all Staff’s Contracts is accordingly hereby lifted. “Therefore all staff are expected to continue with their duties beyond the 31, May, 2020” Said Sengendo.
“In spite of the fact that most staff stopped working due to the lock
down in March 2020, the university paid their staff full salaries both March and April.
Meanwhile the arrangements have been finalized to ensure that by 22nd May 2020, all staff at IUIU compuses are paid their full salary of May 2020 to enable them to enjoy Eid El-Fitri and staff welfare will continue to be one of the management’s to prioritize” Said Sengend.
He adds that’s the university shall make the necessary arrangements for return of only final year students on 4nd June 2020 on the university finances and make appropriate decisions in the best interest of the welfare of students staff and university at large. Therefore all IUIU final year students at both undergraduate and postgraduate should report to their respective IUIU compuses. “All students are strongly advised to report at the earliest and endeavor to fulfill all their obligations so as not to lose learning time. Said Sengend.
However, all Dean’s and their deputies, heads of departments, lectures of final year students to report to their respective compuses on 26th, May 2020 and plan to resume lectures on 4rd June 2020.
Mr. Sengeno assured the general public to refutes and disassociate with false information published on social media indicating IUIU has close all it’s compuses because all IUIU compuses are fully opened and functional besides the lockdown and teaching that was suspended by the government of Uganda to stop the spread of Covid-19 Pandemic and the university has never been closed since started operational in 1988. The university has four campuses in Mbale, Kampala, Arua and the female campus at Kabojja in Wakiso District.
