Uganda police Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department, Kibuli have on Monday afternoon revealed that Mubende High court judge, Joseph Mulangira is the complainant in a libel charge filed against a Human Rights Lawyer Eron Kiiza of Kiiza and Mugisha Advocates.
Police said that the complainant asserts that the petitions filed by Lawyer Kiiza to the Judicial Service Commission and Chief Justice and his social media posts had defamatory and libel contents amounting to tarnishing the name and reputation of the judge.
it should be noted that Attorney Eron Kiiza last week defied the summons of September 13, 2019, on allegations of police failure to disclose the charge details hence not appearing in person but sending legal representation of over five lawyers.
When asked whether he wasn’t shaken by the summons, Kiiza expressed confidence and calmness by vowing never to trade his calling of defending human right for commercial law and mere intimidation. “This won’t threaten me, I took human rights by passion, I won’t be compromised to commercial law” Attorney Kiiza noted.
“Even after here, I am going to continue on this path that l have chosen as a Human Rights Lawyer, this has nothing to do with breaking my passion for human rights” Kiiza added.
After reconvening, Kiiza Eron and his legal team plus few of the many activists who were allowed inside, learn that the judge in the Mubende land case where over 3000 people were allegedly illegally forced off of their land was the complainant in this matter.
The same case involves two journalists who were kidnapped, beaten, cameras confiscated while covering the land matter.
Addressing journalists after the interrogation, Counsel Nicholas Opiyo and Abdallah Kiwanuka revealed that they agreed that Eron submits his statement on Wednesday.
when Kiiza appeared today before Kato Tumuhimbise Paul, commissioner in charge of Media Crimes, police seemed not ready for the accused who stormed in company of prominent Human Rights lawyers including Nicholas Opiyo of Chapter four , Abdullah Kiwanuka, Odur Anthony, Arinaitwe Peter, Walyemera Daniel, Katana Benjamin, George Musisi, Wande Samuel, Kabahizi Edgar, Osama Lazarus Dill, Asiimwe Odre, Kiwuka Violah, counsel Umar, Counsel Hussein, Kiiza Kenneth, Kusingura Anthony, Lillian Drabo, Kakaire Sulaiman among others. The big number of lawyers who stormed police forced the officers handling the matter to adjourn the matter for over an hour as they consulted their bosses.
Among activists groups that escorted Kiiza include; The Alternative Youth Movement, Rhizing Women Uganda, The Jobless brotherhood, Lantern Meet of Poets, Unwanted Witness among others.
