We’ve just had our first glimpse of an Oscar backstage!
Sam Rockwell – wearing custom-made cufflinks bearing the name of his girlfriend Leslie Bibb – has just rocked up to the press room, celebratory bottle of beer in hand.
Rockwell, who plays disgraced police officer Jason Dixon in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, spoke of his preparation – including riding with cops and meeting up with a skin graft doctor.
He then pays an emotional tribute to his friend, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, having dedicated his Oscar to him on stage at the end of his speech.
“You guys heard that? I thought the music was playing,” he said, looking genuinely pleased, before adding: “I guess you want to start making me cry.
“He was an old friend of mine. He was very close to me and he was an inspiration to all of my peers.”
Rockwell was asked about the fact some people found his character in Three Billboards problematic for being racist and homophobic.
It’s a complicated issue. It’s not like they’re redeemed at the end of the movie – they have work to do. Maybe some therapy.
