Voters in Rukiga County, Kabale District want Herbert Kabafunzaki, the State Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations to be relieved of his duties.
Their plea comes as the minister is arraigned in court following his arrest for allegedly soliciting a 30 million Shillings bribe from Hamid Muhammed, the proprietor of AYA Group of Companies. He was arrested from Serena Hotel in Kampala on Saturday.
Kabafunzaki allegedly solicited the bribe to help Hamid clear his image following a complaint of sexual harassment filed by one of his former employees at the Nakasero based Hilton Hotel. The employee had lodged the complaint with both police and with Kabafunzaki, in his capacity as the labour minister.
Now voters in Rukiga County want Kabafunzaki ousted on the basis of the scandal.
Francis Byamukama, a voter from Bucundura in Kashambya Sub County says that the arrest is shocking. Byamukama adds that Kabafunzaki no longer deserves any leadership post. Loy Ahurira, a voter from Rushebeya in Rwamucucu Sub County says Kabafunzaki is no longer fit to lead let alone champion the interests of the laborers in Uganda since he could not even help the employee whose rights were violated in the hands of AYA brothers.
Grace Orikiriza, a voter from Butare in Muhanga Town Council says Kabafunzaki deserves a heavy punishment and advises that he resigns instead of waiting to be expelled.
Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda, the Kitanga Parish Priest also demands that Kabafunzaki be relieved of his duties and be given a heavy punishment for his actions
