Scuffle and verbal exchange ensued as Uganda National Bureau of Standards UNBS officials accompanied by police carried out an operation where it impounded shoddy and substandard electronic products on market at KK trust building along namirembe road in Kampala and closed the shops where same products have been found.
Traders questioned as to why officials don’t give them prior information while carrying out such operation.
According to the surveillance officer of UNBS Denis Odur the operation follows a realisation that sub standard products have highly flooded the market especially electronics yet they are very dangerous and harmful to the society.
Some of the products impounded included electronic kettles, flat irons labelled Phipps yet they are not, electrical and extension cables and sub standard switches among others however there were no arrests to that effect.
Odur said that their next step is to summon all the traders who have been dealing in these substandard products to police, record statements and then prosecute them accordingly in addition to getting the source of the products so that they can trace backwards.
When asked why they let the substandard products in the country and later impound them from shops, Odur said that vice is caused by the polyous board, which at times results into smuggling, in addition to under declaration of products which results into flooding of fake products on market.
He added that despite the above it doesn’t make the act of selling fake products legal.
