The Cecafa U-20 Officially Kicks Off Today

By: Denis Kayongo. Cecafa U-20 is Officially Kicking off Today in Arusha Tanzinia to see the Winner of the 13th Editon Since Tanzania Taking it in 1971.

The Cecafa U-20 Officially Kicks Off Today

The CECAFA U-20 Championship is a football (soccer) tournament organised by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), and includes national under 20 teams from Central and East Africa. 

This is the 13th Edition of this Tournament Since it was first held in 1971 and the Reigning Champions Tanzania were the first Team to win the Trophy. This is also going to be the second time for the Tournament to be organised in Tanzania since 2006 and Uganda won that Edition.

Uganda and Ethopia are the record champions of this tournament with both taking it Three times(3), Uganda(3) took in 1973, 2006 and 2010 while Ethopia(3) in 1995, 1996, and 2005 Followed by Kenya twice(2) in 1975 and 1999 Tanzaina twice (2) in 1971 and 2019 yet Somalia(1) and Zanzibar(1) have won it only once, 1981 and 2003 respectively.

Nations like Rwanda, Eritrea, Djibouti, Burundi, and South Sudan have never won this tournament but Burundi lost two consective finals back in 2005 and 2006 to Ethopia and Uganda respectively while Eritrea have only lost one final in 2010 to Uganda.

Teams are coming to this Edtion's tournament knowing that it's the only way to qualify for AFCON U-20  Finals which will be in Mauritania. For this time only Eight (8) Nations are to participate out of Ten (10) Natios. Apart from Rwanda and Eritrea who will not take part, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Djibouti, Somalia, Burundi, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, will participate in the competition.

Under the Guidence of the head coach Morley Byekwaso and his Staff members Felix Ayobo Fitness coach, Billy Kiggundu Goalkeeping coach, Joan Namusisi Team Coordinator, Yahaya Katumba Team Doctor, and Ibrahim Rasoul Ariga Leader of delegation. The Hippops left the country on Friday and they are now settled in Arusha Tanzania.

The Squad is Captained by the 19-year old central defender Gavin Kizitto Mugweri and was placed in Group B with Burundi, Eritrea* and South Sudan.
