UAPO takes cancer awareness campaigns to health facilities

In abide to increase awareness about the burden of cancer in Uganda, the Uganda Alliance of Patience Organisation UAPO together with Uganda Women Cancer Support Organisation UWOCASO have embarked on a campaign to take sensitization to 20 different hospitals around kampala in the first phase.
The campaign has commenced with Kisenyi Health Center IV were the cancer survivors narrated their stories to patients who had gone for various medical treatment and encouraged them to go for routine check up, always to take the doctors advise and surround themselves with people who encourage them.

The assistant in charge of Kisenyi Health IV, Alissa Miriam Fretus said on the average they get one cancer patient in a week and 9 out of every 100 people screened.
She however said to their dismay when they refer the patients to the Uganda Cancer institute Mulago many of them do not go attributing it to ignorance and poverty.
She also cited out under staffing and inadequate resources and equipment as some of the major challenges faced by the health centres.
Mr. John Amanya from UAPO appealed to the public to change their lifestyle for instance  stop taking alcohol, smoking and the mothers to make time for breast feeding their babies.
