Universities are seeking for a meeting with president M7 over heavy taxes

University vice chancellors uniting under their umbrella body, Uganda vice chancellors’ forum have written to president Museveni seeking for a meeting with him to share on the current high education status and the challenges they are faced with.
The body’s Chairperson who is also the Uganda Christian University UCU vice chancellor Rev. Canon Dr. John Ssenyonyi said that their letter seeking for a meeting with president museveni was sent to him on 24th November 2018.
Dr. Ssenyonyi says such engagements enables government officials to make informed decision about the sector since they first get a clear understanding of the challenges and the priorities of those in the sector which results into continuous consultation of the stakeholders and hence coming up with relevant and reasonable policies.
Dr. Ssenyonyi cited out heavy taxes levied on the development projects of the higher institutions of learning as one of the major hinderance of education growth.
It’s on the above note he urged government to completely waive or significantly reduce on such taxes levied on development projects to enable growth of the sector.
According to Dr. Ssenyonyi currently a university to put up a building of one billion Uganda shillings it will have to incur over 870 million taxes.
