Following the battering of sports journalists Peace Diane Bagala working with CBS fm and BBS Terefayina and Vipers SC media officer Kenneth Muwanga by the army men who left them with wounds on Wednesday 22, January, 2020 at Wankulukuku Stadium during the Viper SC vs Kajjansi United game, Uganda Journalists ‘Association (UJA) leadership has met the army leadership over the same.
According to the statement released by the Association’ spokesperson Kabuye Ronald, the army spokesperson Richard Karemire apologized for their errant officers violent actions and promised that actions shall be taken against the culprits.
”In the meeting that was held on Friday 24th January and attended by UJA’s vice president Buganda region Ssendegeya Muhammad Byayi, one of the victims Peace Diane Bagala and the UPDF spokesperson Brigadier Richard Karemire at the UPDF Headquarters in Mbuya, the army apologized for the inappropriate behavior of its officers before pledging to bring to book the perpetrators who unleashed the barbaric violent actions against journalists who were executing their lawful duties and to compensate for the lost property and also pay the medical bills.
UJA vice president Buganda Region, Ssendegeya Muhammad Byayi who condemned the errant officer’s barbaric actions, requested the armed forces to refrain from actions that violate journalists and human rights before reiterating the association’s commitment to defend journalist’s rights.’ reads the statement in parts
It should be recalled that Peace Diane was caned with an electric wire and badly kicked at the back!
She was later given protection by URA FC goalkeeping Coach Stephen Billy Kiggundu who later stopped the army from causing further injuries to the soft spoken journalist.
Vipers SC media officer Kenneth Muwanga, among others, was also hit before he was saved by his athleticism.
Many fans, including the innocents, were also mercilessly beaten.
