Makerere university council has resolved not to include the over 400 student’s eligible for graduation on the graduation list as student’s body seek court and ministry of education redress. This has been revealed by the student’s guild president Ssemboga Roy who also attended the meeting that started at 9pm and up to 5pm was still on at the university main building Ssemboga said that the council has instead instituted a verification committee to authentic the student’s plight on case by case basis starting on the 20th this month and that’s Monday next week yet the graduation is scheduled for Tuesday the same week. Ssemboga said that the committee whose chairperson he didn’t tell will after verification of the eligible students it will issue them with transcripts then they will be left to graduate in 2008 hence they will not be issued with a certificate. However Ssemboga comforted the affected students that the students body is in the process of seeking for a court order to have them added on the list as for him he was heading to meet the education ministry over the same issue. “We know court might fail us, am now heading to the education ministry to address this matter seriously, expeditiously and with utmost fairness because the students are not the problem but the system. The university should know its role is to transfer knowledge and then graduate students who have requirements like most of you” said Ssemboga Earlier in the day police arrested the guild minister in charge of academic affairs William Karamaji who attempted to force his way inside the council meeting to have the students resolved. Karamaji was taken to wandegeya police station where is detained while the other students who were chanting in demand for inclusion on the graduation list were instructed to leave the main building. Most of the students missing out on the lists are from school of humanities and social services, education school of statistics and planning and agriculture, and environmental studies
