Makerere College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS) and the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) have formalized their commitment to bolstering industrial research efforts through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaborative agreement seeks to harness research capabilities to address challenges within Uganda’s manufacturing sector, ultimately enhancing its growth and competitiveness.

Aligned with its strategic objectives, Makerere University prioritizes forging strong partnerships and maintaining a research-centric approach to drive innovation and development. The MoU signing ceremony, held at UMA on February 27, 2024, marked a significant milestone in this endeavor.

Deo JB Kayemba, Chairman of UMA’s Board, underscored the importance of integrating research into industrial practices, citing examples from countries such as India, Japan, and South Korea, where research-led initiatives have propelled industrial advancement. He emphasized the critical role of innovation in driving the manufacturing sector forward and highlighted the necessity of collaboration in realizing this vision.

Prof. Eria Hisali, the Principal of CoBAMS at Makerere, expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts and pledged to operationalize the MoU effectively. He emphasized the importance of enhancing graduates’ practical skills by involving industry experts in curriculum development and delivery, thereby enriching students’ knowledge base and fostering skills development.

Prof. Hisali also stressed the imperative of innovation to support industry, manufacturing, and technology, aligning with the overarching objective of promoting locally manufactured goods and achieving self-sufficiency. The partnership between Makerere University and UMA will encompass various activities, including joint research endeavors, publication of findings, policy paper writing, and engagement with relevant stakeholders.

Under the MoU, specific initiatives will be undertaken to enhance collaboration between the two entities. These initiatives include providing internship opportunities to selected students, facilitating knowledge transfer and staff exchange programs, organizing joint seminars, workshops, and conferences aimed at skill development, and collaborating on curriculum review and development to align with industry needs.

Overall, the collaboration between Makerere University and UMA signifies a concerted effort to drive industrial research and innovation, ultimately contributing to the growth and competitiveness of Uganda’s manufacturing sector.
