Police in Kabale District have arrested 72 youths in connection with an alleged scanning operation that has reportedly been targeting people across the country.
The arrests were made yesterday during an operation at the Gleam Supermarket building along the Kabale–Mbarara Road. The operation was led by the Kabale Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Michael Muramira Kyakashari.
According to Kyakashari, 61 of the arrested youths are believed to be victims who were lured from different districts across Uganda with promises of employment opportunities. The remaining 11 suspects are alleged to be the masterminds behind the recruitment and training activities.
The group, comprising both males and females, had reportedly been operating under a company known as Canan Dream Visionaries Limited. Some of the victims who talked to mk news link.com reporter on condition of anonymity say the victims were required to pay 15,000 Uganda shillings as a registration fee. They were also allegedly forced to contact their relatives back home to send additional sums of money ranging between 1.7 million and 2.2 million shillings.While speaking, they said that they were informed to come and be trained in food nutrition. One of the victims said that she was called and told to come so that they could help take her out of the country.
Deputy RDC Kyakashari revealed that most of the youths are from Eastern Uganda, particularly the districts of Manafwa, Namisindwa, Kore, Pallisa, Iganga, and Soroti, among others. A smaller number are from Western Uganda, including Mbarara, Ntungamo, Rukungiri, Rukiga, Rubanda, Kanungu, Kiruhura, and Kisoro.
He added that the alleged ringleaders are expected to face several charges, including human trafficking and involvement in rebel activities, as investigations into the matter continue.
