AGENT BANKING! Here is a Guide to Becoming a CenteAgent in Uganda

If you’re planning to become a CenteAgent in Uganda, it’s important to understand the agent banking requirements set by our regulator and our bank. This guide explains what Centenary Bank requires to onboard CenteAgents and why each requirement matters.

Agent banking allows approved businesses to offer banking services within their communities while earning commissions on transactions. Since agents handle customer funds and data, eligibility is based on clear legal, financial, and operational standards.

Business Registration and Legal Documents

To qualify as a bank agent, your business must be formally registered and operational. You will be required to provide:

  • A Certificate of Registration or Incorporation, supported by a Company Search
  • Governance documents relevant to your business structure, such as Articles and Memorandum of Association, a Partnership Deed, or a Board Resolution
  • A valid trading license showing at least six months of continuous operation
  • A Tax Identification Number (TIN) certificate issued by URA.

These documents confirm that your business is legitimate, traceable, and compliant with Ugandan law.

Personal Identification Requirements

Applicants must also submit personal identification documents to support accountability and due diligence. These include:

  • A completed and signed application form
  • A clear copy of a valid National ID
  • Two recent passport-size photographs
  • Recommendation letters from LC1 and LC3 authorities

This information helps the bank verify identity and community standing.

Financial Records and Credit History

Centenary Bank assesses financial stability before appointing agents. You will need to submit:

  • Bank or mobile money statements covering the last six months from a licensed institution
  • A short description of your business activity over the same period
  • A Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) report to confirm your credit history
  • Audited accounts for the past two years, where available, to strengthen your application

These records demonstrate your ability to manage cash flows responsibly.

Business Location and Premises

Your business location must be suitable for offering banking services. The application requires:

  • A sketch map indicating the exact location of your premises
  • Two colored photographs of the business—one showing the exterior and one the interior

This helps the bank assess accessibility, visibility, and operational readiness.

Compliance and Data Protection

Since agents handle customer information, compliance is mandatory. You must provide:

  • A Data Protection certificate issued by the Personal Data Protection Office
  • Two signed copies of the agency agreement

These ensure adherence to Uganda’s data protection and banking regulations.

Next Steps

Once you have gathered all required documents, visit your nearest Centenary Bank branch to begin the application process. Submitting a complete and well-organized application improves approval timelines.

Meeting the agent banking requirements in Uganda is the foundation for operating as a trusted CenteAgent and building a sustainable income stream through agent banking services.
