Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo delivered a career-defining performance at the London Marathon, finishing third in a national record time of 2:00:28 in one of the greatest marathon races ever staged.
Kiplimo shattered his previous personal best of 2:03:37 to secure a podium finish in a men’s elite race that rewrote the history books. His effort came in a landmark event where, for the first time in an official race, the two-hour marathon barrier was broken.
Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe stormed to victory in a stunning 1:59:30, setting a new world record and becoming the first man to run a sub-two-hour marathon under standard race conditions. Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha also dipped below the mark, finishing second in 1:59:41 in his marathon debut.
Kiplimo’s performance placed him among an elite trio, as all three podium finishers broke the previous world record, underlining the extraordinary pace of the race.
Fellow Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei finished 12th with a time of 2:06:39 in a competitive field.
The race, held under near-perfect conditions on London’s flat course, saw Sawe surge ahead in the final kilometres after breaking away from Kejelcha, drawing roaring support from crowds lining the streets before sprinting to victory on The Mall.
The achievement marks a historic milestone for marathon running, a distance rooted in ancient legend and long considered one of the ultimate tests of human endurance. The sub-two-hour barrier had remained elusive in official competition, despite Eliud Kipchoge running 1:59:40 in a controlled, non-record-eligible event in 2019.
In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa successfully defended her title, winning in a record 2:15:41 in the women’s-only category. She finished ahead of Kenya’s Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei in a race that also saw multiple athletes post historic times.
The London Marathon continues to attract the world’s top talent, offering significant prize money and bonuses for record-breaking performances and fast times. Sunday’s race not only rewarded its winners but also redefined the limits of marathon running, signaling a new era for the sport.
