Police in Wakiso District have launched investigations into an aggravated robbery incident that occurred in the early hours of May 1, 2026, in Nakuwadde Village, even as authorities in Kampala step up operations against rising urban crime.
According to police, an unidentified assailant armed with a panga attacked a resident and made off with a mobile phone and cash. However, in a swift turn of events, vigilant community members mobilised immediately after the incident and successfully tracked down a suspect.
The suspect, identified as Kiyinji Marvin (21), was reportedly found in possession of the stolen phone and was promptly handed over to authorities. He is currently in police custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.
Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire praised the community for their quick response and cooperation, noting that such vigilance plays a critical role in combating crime. He urged the public to remain alert and continue reporting suspicious individuals and activities to nearby police stations.
In a related development, police in Kampala carried out intelligence-led operations on April 29, 2026, targeting criminal elements in Nsambya, particularly within the busy furniture workshop zones of Nsambya Central.
The crackdown followed growing public concern over incidents of phone snatching, muggings, pickpocketing, and theft of motor vehicle parts, especially during peak traffic hours.
Authorities revealed that many suspects have been disguising themselves as brokers and casual workers within the workshops, using the cover of legitimate business activity to carry out theft.
Following extensive screening during the operation, 56 suspects many of whom were already on the police watch list were arrested. Police say the suspects are undergoing further processing and will be arraigned before court.
The twin developments highlight a renewed push by law enforcement, backed by community cooperation, to curb crime and restore public safety in both urban and peri-urban areas.
