Police in Yumbe district, northern Uganda, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspected death of a 54-year-old Bangladeshi national.
Poni Islam, a resident of Lomunga town council in Yumbe and an employee of WKK Company, a contractor on the Yumbe–Terego tarmac road project was found dead inside a lodge on Saturday morning.
According to North West Nile police spokesperson Collins Asea, the incident was reported at Ruvanna Inn Bar and Lodges. He said the body was discovered on May 2 at around 7:00 a.m. after lodge staff grew suspicious when repeated phone calls to the room went unanswered.
Jane, a waitress at the lodge, reportedly heard a phone ringing continuously inside room “Lisbo” without any response. She alerted the cashier, Lillian Obiru, who in turn informed the lodge manager, Jamirah Racheal.
The manager approached the room and repeatedly called out but received no response.
“The door was slightly open and not locked from inside,” Asea said. “When it was pushed open, the man was found lying on the bed.”
The lodge watchman, identified as Cesar, was then called and confirmed that the occupant appeared to be dead. The matter was immediately reported to Yumbe Central Police Station, prompting homicide officers to visit and examine the scene.
Police later transferred the body to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination as investigations into the cause of death continue. Preliminary findings indicate that Poni checked into the lodge on May 1 before he was discovered dead the following morning.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing and have appealed to the public to cooperate with investigators handling the case.
