Uganda has made a bold entry into the global high-speed internet league with the launch of 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) fixed broadband, a move that signals Africa’s accelerating shift toward world-class digital infrastructure and positions the country as an emerging force in the continent’s connectivity race.
The milestone was announced by Savanna Fibre Uganda in Kampala, marking a significant boost to national ICT development and a catalyst for innovation, investment, and economic growth.

Speaking during the launch, Savanna Fibre Uganda Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Alex Wanyoike said the rollout marks a shift in how internet access is perceived and consumed in the country.“This is more than a technology launch. It’s a statement about Uganda’s future,” he said.Mr Wanyoike said High-speed internet should no longer be seen as a luxury for a select few.He said: ” The broadband Internet technology is a national productivity tool that should power innovation, enterprise, and opportunity across all levels of society.”
The introduction of 1 Gbps broadband is expected to unlock new opportunities across key sectors including education, fintech, digital media, remote work, and e-government. This new development will also lay groundwork for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation.
The move aligns with Uganda’s broader policy direction under the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), which has prioritised the expansion of high-quality broadband infrastructure as essential to improving service delivery and strengthening economic competitiveness.
Savanna Fibre officials said the new offering is part of its long-term strategy to make high-speed internet accessible and affordable to a wider segment of the population. This will also disprove perceptions that reliable broadband is only for high-income users.
The company’s rapid growth reflects the evolving connectivity landscape in Uganda. But despite beginning revenue operations just two years ago, Savanna Fibre has expanded its footprint with a focus on delivering inclusive digital access.
Group Chief Technology Officers Mr Humphrey Kobel and Mr Joash Omoke, who attended the launch alongside Mr Wanyoike, said the investment underscores the private sector’s role in accelerating digital infrastructure development.
Industry observers noted that the availability of ultra-fast broadband Internet will significantly enhance Uganda’s participation in the regional and global digital economy, enabling businesses and institutions to adopt data-intensive solutions more effectively.
Savanna Fibre maintains that its mission goes beyond connectivity and aims to drive digital inclusion, support entrepreneurship, and enhance national productivity through affordable, high-performance internet services.
The rollout of 1 Gbps speeds, makes Uganda enter a new phase of connectivity expected to support smarter institutions, digital business models, and broader participation in the knowledge economy.Ends
