The legal and political troubles facing former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among deepened on Sunday after security agencies extended their operations to her luxury residence in Kigo, following an earlier high-profile raid at her home in Nakasero.
A joint team led by the Criminal Investigations Directorate and supported by the Uganda Police Force and other security agencies sealed off the expansive Mutungo-Kigo property as investigators intensified a widening probe into allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment and money laundering.
Images from the scene showed the heavily guarded mansion surrounded by security personnel as detectives carried out searches and examined documents and assets linked to the Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament.
The Kigo operation came less than 24 hours after investigators searched Among’s Nakasero residence in a dramatic move that sent shockwaves through Uganda’s political establishment.
Sources familiar with the investigations said the coordinated operations are part of a broader effort to trace assets and verify the sources of wealth connected to the former Speaker, who is already under scrutiny following a formal complaint lodged with the Inspectorate of Government.
The Inspectorate recently confirmed it had begun processing a petition filed by lawyers and civil society activists seeking an investigation into whether Among breached the Leadership Code through alleged undeclared wealth and unexplained assets.
The complaint followed growing public attention over Among’s lavish lifestyle and high-value acquisitions, including a luxury Rolls-Royce Cullinan that has dominated national political debate.
Security sources indicated that additional operations could extend to other properties associated with the former Speaker and her family, including residences in Bukedea District and Buyende District.
Among is married to Moses Magogo, whose home area in Buyende has also been mentioned as a possible focus of further investigations.
By Sunday evening, authorities had not issued a formal statement on what had been recovered during the searches or whether any arrests had been made.
The rapidly unfolding developments represent one of the most significant anti-corruption operations involving a senior political figure in recent years and are expected to have far-reaching implications for Uganda’s political landscape as the country prepares for the next Parliament.
