Uganda’s widening anti-corruption crackdown has taken a dramatic turn this Monday morning after security agencies towed two high-end luxury vehicles a blue Rolls-Royce and a black Range Rover from the Kigo residence of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.
The vehicles, estimated to be worth billions of shillings, were removed under tight security as investigators continue extensive searches at Among’s sprawling lakeside mansion in Mutungo-Kigo, Wakiso District.
Witnesses say the operation involves heavily armed personnel from the Uganda Police Force, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
The latest development comes amid an escalating anti-graft campaign dubbed Operation Maliza Ufisadi Kiswahili for “End Corruption” which was launched under the direct orders of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
In a strongly worded statement posted on X, Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba vowed that the operation would be expanded and that all those implicated in corruption would be brought to justice.
“The security forces under the direction and instructions of the Commander-in-Chief launched Operation ‘Maliza Ufisadi’ the other day. We shall expand this operation and apprehend all culprits. No one will be spared.”
Muhoozi’s declaration has sent shockwaves through political and bureaucratic circles, signaling what many analysts describe as one of the most far-reaching anti-corruption campaigns in Uganda’s recent history.
Among, the Bukedea Woman MP and outgoing Speaker of Parliament, is at the center of multiple investigations involving allegations of illicit enrichment, money laundering, and possible violations of the Leadership Code Act.
The Inspectorate of Government recently confirmed that it had received a formal petition from lawyers and civil society activists seeking a comprehensive audit of Among’s assets, wealth declarations, and sources of income.
The petition followed months of public scrutiny over her lavish lifestyle, including reports that she acquired a Rolls-Royce valued at approximately Shs3.4 billion, along with several other luxury vehicles and high-end properties.
Monday’s towing of the Rolls-Royce and Range Rover is widely seen as one of the most visible and symbolic moments in the ongoing probe.
The operation unfolds only hours after Among officially withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament, saying she had stepped aside to preserve unity within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
In her statement, Among pledged to fully cooperate with all ongoing investigations and reaffirmed her commitment to continue serving the country in any capacity assigned by President Museveni and the ruling party.
Security sources say the investigations are expected to extend to additional properties linked to Among, including residences in Bukedea and other locations associated with her family.
