The Director of Uganda’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Maj. Tom Magambo, and his family are mourning the heartbreaking loss of his son, Timothy Magambo, who died in a drowning incident in the United States over the weekend.
Timothy Magambo, 18, had just completed his freshman year at the University at Albany in New York. According to police reports, the young student drowned while swimming near Shelter Island, located at the eastern tip of Long Island, on Saturday, May 16.
Authorities said Timothy, who had been living in New York with his mother, Ms. Caroline Nalwanga Magambo — an employee of the United Nations — was part of a group of seven friends who attempted to swim from Wades Beach to Shell Beach across a channel.
During the swim, Timothy reportedly became separated from the group. Investigators later established that he had turned back toward Wades Beach while the others continued ahead. When his friends realized he was missing, they alerted authorities and began searching for him.
According to reports by local media, Timothy was later found floating face down several hundred yards south of the area where he had last been seen. Bystanders quickly pulled him from the water and attempted life-saving measures before emergency responders arrived.
He was rushed to South Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from injuries consistent with drowning, police said.
The tragic death has sent shockwaves through both the Ugandan and New York communities, where Timothy was known as a bright, humble, and promising young man.
Timothy was a recent graduate of Pelham Memorial High School, Class of 2025, where he played lacrosse and actively participated in school activities. He had recently enrolled as a business student at SUNY Albany and was described by friends and classmates as kind-hearted, disciplined, and full of potential.
In an emotional tribute shared on social media, his mother, Ms. Caroline Nalwanga Magambo, expressed the family’s overwhelming grief.
“Our world has turned to darkness. Our sweet Timothy Magambo has been snatched from us,” she wrote.
“I can’t explain the pain I feel right now. Our sunshine is gone. I did not expect the sunset after only 18 years.”
“You are the kindest and most gentle soul I know. You lived and loved everyone around you both young and old. Many times you put the happiness of others above your own.”
“Rest with the Angels my son. I will cry and remember you all the days of my life. I will remember your sweet smile and jokes. You will forever remain loved and remembered.”
Messages of condolence and support have continued to pour in for Maj. Tom Magambo and the entire Magambo family as they navigate one of the most painful moments of their lives.
Authorities in New York continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning incident.
