Uganda Women’s U20 national football team, the Queen Cranes, has clinched bronze at the ongoing African Games in Ghana.

In a nail-biting encounter against Senegal, the Queen Cranes triumphed in a dramatic penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regular time.

Under the guidance of coach Sheryl Botes, the Queen Cranes looked the better side throughout the match but failed to win it in normal time.

Despite Dorcus Lwalisa’s miss in the third penalty for Uganda, Senegal failed to capitalize on the opportunity to level the score, missing their subsequent kick to level the scores level.

The shootout concluded with Uganda emerging victorious at 6-5, thanks to a decisive miss by Senegal’s Fofana Bassene.

Catherine Nagadya, Shamirah Nalugya, Catherine Wujja, Harimah Kanyago, and Shamusa Najjuma converted their penalty kicks for Uganda.

The road to the bronze medal match was challenging for the Queen Cranes, who fell short in the semi-finals against Nigeria, suffering a 2-0 defeat.

Uganda had finished second in Group A, accumulating five points with a victory over Ethiopia and draws against Tanzania and Ghana.

It’s strong to note that this isn’t he first time Uganda takes part in a Women Football tournament at the African Games since Women football was introduced at the games in 2003.
