A political storm is rapidly brewing inside the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) after outgoing State Minister for Foreign Affairs (Regional Cooperation) John Mulimba launched a blistering attack on top party officials, accusing them of commercialising internal elections through massive bribery, voter manipulation, and abuse of power.
In explosive remarks that have sent shockwaves through the ruling party, Mulimba demanded that ongoing corruption investigations linked to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among should not stop at Parliament, but instead extend directly to the NRM Secretariat in Kyadondo.
The minister specifically singled out NRM Treasurer Barbara Nekesa, and powerful figures he accused of turning party elections into what he described as a “cash auction.”
“The election of the workers Member of Parliament, we expected the second national chairperson and the national treasurer to protect the flag bearer, Agnes Kunihira Abwooli,” Mulimba stated.
“Instead, the second national vice chairperson, Anita Among, and the national treasurer of NRM, Barbra Nekesa, distributed millions per voter and brought down Kunihira and presented a biological sister to the national treasurer, Fiona Nakku.”
Mulimba added:
“So if you are talking about corruption and impunity and you think it is only hidden in Parliament, I have given you a hidden example. Museveni should stretch his arm and kick corruption out of NRM and arrest people like Nekesa and her entire group.”
The stunning allegations come at a time when investigations into Among’s financial dealings and alleged extravagant spending continue to dominate national attention.
However, Mulimba’s latest claims now threaten to widen the corruption debate far beyond the August House and place the NRM Secretariat itself under intense public scrutiny.
According to Mulimba, the recent NRM internal elections were heavily influenced by enormous cash handouts allegedly coordinated by senior party officials.
He claimed candidates openly moved with sacks of money in convoys of vehicles during campaigns.
“You would see someone moving with three vehicles, but one of them was specifically carrying money,” Mulimba revealed.
The minister further alleged that in his Samia Bugwe constituency, powerful NRM operatives camped in the area armed with nearly UGX 7 billion allegedly meant to weaken his political network and buy off his supporters.
According to him, some of his mobilisers were allegedly offered between UGX 5 million and UGX 10 million to abandon him, while voters reportedly received between UGX 50,000 and UGX 100,000 on polling day in exchange for support.
Mulimba linked the political attacks against him to his close association with Persis Namuganza, one of Among’s fiercest critics within the ruling party.
He suggested that influential figures aligned to Among turned against him because he chose to stand with Namuganza during her fallout with the former Speaker.
The revelations are now reviving public criticism against the NRM Secretariat, particularly over accusations of wasteful expenditure and alleged financial impropriety.
Critics have once again pointed to the controversial drone show that was recently organised ahead of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony, an event that reportedly consumed nearly UGX 2 billion despite lasting barely 10 minutes.
The highly publicised aerial spectacle had been promoted as a historic technological display intended to thank Ugandans ahead of the inauguration ceremony at Kololo.
However, many Kampala residents were left disappointed after waiting for nearly an hour only to witness a brief drone appearance over parts of Ntinda before the show abruptly ended.
At the time, insiders within the ruling party alleged that much of the money budgeted for the event never reached the actual technology suppliers, with accusations emerging that powerful individuals within the NRM Secretariat benefited heavily from the expenditure.
Public anger intensified as many Ugandans questioned why billions were allegedly being spent on short-lived political public relations events while ordinary citizens continued grappling with unemployment, poor healthcare services, collapsing roads, and rising living costs.
The developments also place renewed pressure on anti-corruption agencies and President Museveni himself to demonstrate whether the ongoing accountability campaign will truly spare no one, including some of the most influential figures inside the ruling party machinery.
