Journalists Detained at Makindye Military Barracks Released After UJA Intervention

Journalists Detained at Makindye Military Barracks Released After UJA Intervention » The Hoima Post –

Three court journalists detained by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) at the General Court Martial in Makindye have been released following swift intervention by the Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) and sustained pressure from the media fraternity.
The journalists—Margaret Zalwango of Vision Group, Judith Kukunda of Uganda Radio Network (URN), and Christine Nabatanzi—were arrested on Monday while covering proceedings tied to the scheduled trial of Gen. Birungi.
Following their release on Monday evening, the UJA issued a statement confirming that the reporters had regained their freedom after successful engagements with UPDF authorities. The association strongly condemned the initial detentions, calling them a violation of constitutional protections for media freedom and the public’s right to information.
“An attack on one journalist is an attack on all. Together we can enhance our safety. Journalism is not a crime,” the UJA stated, while thanking the media stakeholders who rallied behind their colleagues.
At the time of their release, it remained unclear whether the UPDF had returned the journalists’ confiscated equipment.
