The government of France through the French Development Agency (ADF) has funded the further distribution of the clean drinking water from Katosi Water Treatment Plant to an additional 450,000 households.
The Ambassador of France in Uganda, Xavier Sticker said that the development will see 1,500 prepaid standpipes installed in the informal settlements in the north of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
“The construction work of the drinking water distribution network of more than 100km long is due to start in 2024. Ultimately, the Euro-Ugandan partnership in the water sector will mean that more than 5,000,000 people in the Kampala metropolitan area will have access to the sustainable drinking water supply system,” Xavier noted.
He made the remarks while inspecting the Katosi Water Treatment Plant (KWTP) located in Mpunge sub-county, Mukono district recently.
Though KWTP has got a production capacity of 240m liters of water per day, Eng. Johnson Amayo, the deputy Managing Director for National Water and Sewerage Corporation in charge of technical services told the French team that it currently produces only 160m liters per day.
Eng. Amayo said that they are currently working towards construction of two water reservoirs whereby one is to be placed at Kanyanya and the other at Kabulengwa which will boost the production of KWTP to its maximum capacity of 240m liters per day.
“The French Development Agency has already provided over Euros90m, part of which is going to fund the construction of the water reservoirs and the laying of pipes,” he said.
Ambassador Xavier said that in addition to the KWTP, AFD is also working alongside the government on the Kagera River water treatment plant which will supply drinking water to the district of Isingiro and the town of Mbarara.
“Almost one million people will be served with that water. The plant is scheduled for delivery in 2024,” he said.
Xavier said he was so impressed by the works at Katosi Water Treatment Plant saying there is some value for money.
The Ambassador’s visit came in the run-up to the International Water Day, which will be celebrated on March 22.
The visit was earmarked to provide the opportunity to take stock of the extent of work that has been done to improve access to water for the people in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and also to outline how this project will continue to develop in 2024 and beyond.
Eng. Amayo also said that the AFD has also provided Euros1.5m to National Water to do a feasibility study for intended clean water supply in the new cities of Hoima, Fort Portal and Lira.
In the energy sector, AFD is also working in partnership with Uganda to rehabilitate the Kiira-Nalubaale hydropower plant, whose capacity will represent one third of Uganda’s current electricity production.
