Bukoto Central Member of Parliament, Hon. Richard Ssebamala’s recent remarks regarding Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba have sparked widespread debate on social media, with some sections of the public interpreting his comments as support for the ruling establishment.
However, people close to the legislator have clarified that his remarks were largely misunderstood and taken out of their intended context.
Speaking during a recent TikTok discussion, Ssebamala argued that Ugandans need to develop a more realistic understanding of political power, leadership structures, and influence, both locally and internationally. According to sources familiar with his position, the MP was not endorsing any political camp but rather emphasizing the need for political maturity and honest analysis.
During the discussion, Ssebamala reportedly pointed to Gen. Muhoozi’s military leadership role, international exposure, diplomatic engagements, and global networks as factors that cannot be ignored when discussing Uganda’s future leadership dynamics.
“All he was saying is that Ugandans should stop analyzing leadership only through emotions, insults, or social media trends,” one political associate said. “Understanding how power works does not mean someone has joined the state.”
Observers have also pointed to Ssebamala’s own political history to counter claims that he is seeking favor from the establishment. In 2021, Ssebamala defeated former Vice President Edward Ssekandi in Bukoto Central, becoming one of the few opposition-leaning politicians to unseat a longtime senior government figure.
He also previously contested for the Democratic Party presidency against Norbert Mao, in what supporters described as an effort to resist external influence and restore independence within the party.
Supporters further argue that Ssebamala entered politics as an already wealthy businessman and therefore cannot easily be accused of pursuing state patronage for survival.
Political analysts say the debate surrounding his remarks highlights the growing tension in Uganda’s political discourse, where public figures are increasingly judged through partisan interpretations rather than the substance of their arguments.
The MP is known for promoting Pan-Africanist ideas and advocating for strategic political thinking, particularly among young people. His allies insist that his recent comments should be viewed within that broader ideological perspective rather than through narrow party lenses.
As debate continues online, supporters maintain that Ssebamala’s core message was simply a call for Ugandans to elevate their understanding of leadership, influence, and political organization in modern governance.
