Statement By the President, Uganda Olympic Committee / Commonwealth Games Uganda at the Olympic Day Tooke Run Breakfast Meeting 26 May 2026,
Bushenyi Director General, PIBID/BIRDC, Prof. Florence Isabirye Muranga Our esteemed partners Distinguished guests Ladies and gentlemen good morning.
It is a pleasure to welcome you to this important breakfast meeting as we advance preparations for the Olympic Day Tooke Run 2026. Today, we gather not only to plan an event, but to reaffirm a partnership that is reshaping how Uganda understands the relationship between sport, nutrition, and national development.
Over the past months, the Uganda Olympic Committee/Commonwealth Games Uganda and PIBID/BIRDC have forged a collaboration grounded in the core values of Olympism— Excellence, Respect, and Friendship. These values guide our athletes, but they also guide institutions that aspire to transform communities and build a healthier nation.
A central pillar of this partnership is nutrition for sports performance. We know that excellence on the track, in the ring, or on the field begins long before competition day. It begins with what our athletes eat.
Proper nutrition fuels endurance, sharpens focus, accelerates recovery, and extends athletic careers. Without it, talent alone cannot carry an athlete to the podium. This is where PIBID/BIRDC brings unmatched value. Through innovation in banana industrial development—particularly the Tooke products—PIBID/BIRDC is demonstrating that Uganda can produce high-quality, nutrient-rich foods that support both community wellbeing and elite sports performance.
Our partnership is therefore not symbolic; it is strategic. It positions sport as a platform for promoting better nutrition, and nutrition as a foundation for sporting excellence. The Olympic Day Tooke Run is the national expression of this shared vision. It is more than a celebration of Olympism. It is a call to action—inviting communities to embrace healthier lifestyles, encouraging families to adopt better nutrition habits, and demonstrating how local agricultural innovation can support both everyday health and high-performance sport.
This year’s event comes at a pivotal moment. Uganda is preparing for major multisport engagements, including the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar and the Commonwealth Games. Our athletes will carry the national flag onto global stages, and they deserve every advantage we can provide.
Through this partnership, we are strengthening the nutritional foundation that fuels their performance, resilience, and competitive edge. Ladies and gentlemen, As President of the UOC/CGU, I reaffirm our long-term commitment to this partnership. We are building systems that will outlast events—systems that support athletes, empower communities, and contribute to national development. Allow me to express sincere appreciation to our special guests for honouring this initiative with your presence. I also extend heartfelt thanks to the Director General of PIBID/BIRDC—our Tooke Ambassador—for her visionary leadership and unwavering dedication. To all our partners gathered here: Your support is vital. We invite you to go beyond participation—to believe, to commit, and to lead in this cause that unites sport, nutrition, and community wellbeing. Together, let us run for nutrition. Together, let us strengthen sports performance. Together, let us build a healthier, more competitive Uganda. I thank you.
