India has delivered a second and significantly larger tranche of medical assistance to Africa, reinforcing regional efforts to combat Ebola and strengthen public health preparedness across the continent.
An Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft landed at Entebbe International Airport carrying 43 tonnes of critical medical supplies destined for the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The consignment was formally handed over by India’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Upender Singh Rawat.
The shipment includes a wide range of medical, diagnostic and protective equipment, such as infection prevention supplies, diagnostic and monitoring devices, sample transport kits, medicines, supplements and protective gear for frontline healthcare workers.
The assistance comes in response to a request from the African Union Commission and is aimed at supporting Africa CDC’s ongoing Ebola response efforts, particularly in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), while also strengthening the continent’s broader public health emergency response capacity.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the latest consignment follows an initial emergency shipment of approximately 2.5 tonnes of medical supplies that was dispatched to Kampala on May 24. The first tranche included protective equipment, medical monitoring devices, essential medicines and nutritional supplements.
The Indian Air Force highlighted the humanitarian mission on its official social media platforms, noting that the operation demonstrated its rapid-response capabilities during international emergencies.
“An IAF C-17 Globemaster-III airlifted critical medical aid from New Delhi to Uganda on 02 Jun 26 to combat the Ebola virus outbreak,” the force said.
The MEA said India’s support was specifically tailored to meet Africa CDC’s requirements in containing Ebola outbreaks and enhancing regional preparedness for future public health emergencies.
“This assistance reflects India’s enduring commitment to its partnership with African countries and its continued support in addressing public health challenges across the continent,” the ministry said.
Africa CDC welcomed the emergency supplies, describing them as a significant contribution to ongoing containment efforts. The agency noted that the aid was delivered through its Eastern Regional Coordinating Centre in Uganda before being mobilised to support response operations in eastern DRC.
“The assistance will strengthen ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak and support affected communities,” Africa CDC said, while expressing gratitude to the Government and people of India for their solidarity with Africa.
Officials said the supplies will help improve disease surveillance, diagnosis and infection prevention measures, while enhancing the protection of healthcare workers operating on the front lines of public health emergencies.
The latest delivery underscores the growing India–Africa partnership in the health sector, with both sides increasingly collaborating on emergency response mechanisms, disease control initiatives and healthcare system strengthening.
Indian officials have indicated that New Delhi remains in close coordination with the African Union Commission and Africa CDC and stands ready to provide further medical and logistical assistance should the situation require additional support.
