RE: A HUMBLE PROPOSAL TO UNITE UGANDA THROUGH NATIONAL REMEMBRANCE DAY – SIKU YA KUMBUKUMBU YA KITAIFA ON JUNE 3

Your Excellency,
I greet you in the name of our Lord and in the spirit of patriotism, with deep respect for your decades of sacrifice and leadership to our motherland, Uganda.

I am Godfrey Tinka, of Delight Africa Ministries. I write this open letter as a citizen, a man of faith, and a son of Uganda who believes deeply in the unity you have fought for.
Your Excellency, every June our nation pauses twice in seven days. On June 3, we remember the Uganda Martyrs who died at Namugongo for refusing to renounce their God. On June 9, we remember our national heroes who died for refusing to abandon their country.
I believe these two days are telling one story. It is time we honor them as one.
I humbly propose that we consolidate these commemorations into a single public holiday: National Remembrance Day / Siku ya Kumbukumbu ya Kitaifa, to be observed on June 3 at Namugongo.
Why This Matters for Uganda:
One Nation, One Altar of Sacrifice
The Martyrs died with prayers on their lips. Our Heroes died with Uganda in their hearts. Different altars. Same conviction. Same courage. Same love for something greater than themselves. By remembering them together at Namugongo, we declare that Uganda makes no distinction between those who died for faith and those who died for freedom.
Work as Worship: A Message for the Church and Nation
Scripture teaches in Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” Your Excellency, this means the soldier who dies defending the innocent, the nurse who serves in war, the freedom fighter who falls for justice — each is offering worship. The Martyrs worshiped through faith unto death. Our Heroes worshiped through service unto death. Both are holy.
Naming June 3 National Remembrance Day tells every Ugandan that building this nation — in Parliament, in UPDF, in classrooms, on farms — is sacred work. It challenges our pulpits to teach that patriotism is worship, and it challenges our citizens to see duty as devotion.
Using the Global Platform God Has Given Us
June 3 is already on the world’s calendar. Pilgrims come from Kenya, Tanzania, DRC, Nigeria, and beyond. Namugongo’s roads, security, and media are already prepared. Why build a new stage when God has already given us one? Let us invite the world to see not only our saints, but also our heroes. Let Namugongo become the place where Uganda shows the world that faith and patriotism kneel at the same altar.
Practical Wisdom for a Developing Nation
Two public holidays in seven days cost our economy, disrupt our schools, and slow our progress. One solemn day of remembrance honors our dead with dignity, then sends us back to the work of building the Uganda they dreamed of. One day. Greater impact.
Our Humble Request, Your Excellency:
Redesignate June 3 as National Remembrance Day / Siku ya Kumbukumbu ya Kitaifa, retaining its public holiday status.
Expand the official Namugongo program to formally honor both the Uganda Martyrs and all national heroes as acts of worship and service.
Repurpose June 9 as a working day dedicated to civic education and patriotism in schools and institutions.
Your Excellency, you have always taught us that Uganda’s liberation was both spiritual and political. This is a chance to seal that lesson for our children: that at Namugongo, we remember all who died for what they believed.
We are not removing the Martyrs, Sir. We are bringing the Heroes home to Namugongo.
Thank you for your consideration, and for your life of service to Uganda. May God continue to bless you and our nation.
For God and My Country.
Kwa Mungu na Nchi Yangu.
