Uganda has achieved a major milestone in its digital and services economy after being ranked the 24th most competitive Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) destination globally in the 2026 Global Outsourcing Talent Index.
The ranking places Uganda among the world’s top 13 percent of outsourcing destinations, outperforming more than 160 countries assessed in the independent index, which evaluated 193 nations worldwide.
According to the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, the achievement reflects Uganda’s growing competitiveness in the global outsourcing industry, driven by its skilled workforce, strong English language proficiency, affordable labour costs, and continued investment in digital transformation.
The Global Outsourcing Talent Index, published by international staffing firm Ataraxis, assesses countries based on several factors including labour costs, talent availability, English proficiency, digital infrastructure, business environment, legal frameworks, and political stability.
Uganda performed particularly well in labour-cost competitiveness, ranking 12th globally, while maintaining strong performance in English proficiency and workforce readiness.
Within the East African Community, Uganda ranked second only to Kenya and emerged as one of only seven African countries featured among the global top 25 outsourcing destinations.
Government officials say the ranking is a significant endorsement of Uganda’s efforts to position itself as a leading destination for Business Process Outsourcing and digital services on the African continent.
Speaking on the achievement, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Aminah Zawedde, said the ranking validates the government’s strategic investments in digital infrastructure, skills development, and the implementation of the National BPO Policy.
She noted that continued investment in technology, innovation, and human capital development will further strengthen Uganda’s competitiveness and attractiveness to international investors seeking reliable outsourcing destinations.
Industry analysts say the recognition could boost investor confidence and attract multinational companies looking for cost-effective locations with a young, educated, and English-speaking workforce.
The outsourcing sector is increasingly becoming an important source of employment and foreign exchange earnings for developing economies. Uganda’s improved ranking is expected to create new opportunities for young professionals in areas such as customer support, data processing, software services, digital marketing, and back-office operations.
The latest recognition also reinforces Uganda’s growing reputation as a regional technology and innovation hub, highlighting the country’s readiness to compete in the global digital economy.
As competition for outsourcing investments intensifies worldwide, the ranking positions Uganda as an attractive destination for companies seeking skilled talent, operational efficiency, and a supportive business environment.
The achievement marks another step forward in Uganda’s journey toward becoming a knowledge-based economy powered by technology, innovation, and digital services.
