Security authorities in Pakwach District have arrested five Congolese nationals who allegedly entered Uganda illegally as the government intensifies efforts to prevent the spread of Ebola into the country.
The suspects were intercepted at the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) checkpoint in Pakwach while traveling to Kampala in a private vehicle. Authorities say the group bypassed official border entry procedures despite ongoing restrictions and heightened surveillance at border points.
Pakwach Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Achile Twaibu confirmed the arrests, noting that the five individuals will be deported through the Goli border crossing in line with established immigration and public health protocols.
“The suspects entered the country through unauthorized routes and failed to comply with the required entry procedures currently in place,” Twaibu said.
The latest arrests bring the total number of Congolese nationals deported from the West Nile sub-region since June 1 to 39, highlighting the government’s increased enforcement of border control measures amid regional Ebola concerns.
Health officials have maintained a high level of vigilance following reports of Ebola cases in neighboring areas, warning that strict public health interventions could be implemented if the disease is detected in the region.
Dr. Jimmy Opigo, a senior health official, said authorities are prepared to take decisive action should an Ebola case be confirmed in West Nile.
According to Dr. Opigo, a limited outbreak could potentially be contained within 105 days if detected early and managed effectively. However, widespread community transmission would significantly complicate response efforts and could extend containment operations to as long as 210 days.
The warning underscores the importance of preventive measures currently being enforced at Uganda’s borders, particularly in districts bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Authorities have urged residents and travelers to remain vigilant, comply with health guidelines, and use only designated border entry points. Security and health teams continue to work jointly to monitor movements across the border and strengthen disease surveillance systems.
Officials say the ongoing operations are aimed at safeguarding public health while ensuring that cross-border movements are conducted through lawful and regulated channels.
As Uganda remains on high alert, government agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to preventing the entry and spread of Ebola through coordinated security, immigration, and public health interventions.
