The Indian Association Uganda has proudly celebrated and honored Hon. Sanjay Tanna, Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, and Hon. Shyam Tanna, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Tororo Municipality, in recognition of their remarkable achievements, exemplary leadership, and unwavering commitment to national service.
The recognition ceremony held yesterday brought together members of the Indian community, business leaders, and distinguished guests who applauded the two leaders for their significant contributions to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation and national development.
The Tanna Family
Among the key figures present was Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, chairman Ruparelia Group and Nepalese consul to Uganda.
Speaking during the event, minster Tanna reflected on his inspiring journey in public service, attributing his rise to national leadership to nearly three decades of close collaboration with the Government of Uganda, coupled with dedication, resilience, and hard work.
“I have been working closely with the Government of Uganda for nearly 30 years,” Tanna said, noting that persistence, commitment, and service to the country had been the driving forces behind his success.
He encouraged members of the Indian community to remain united, continue investing in Uganda, and actively participate in the country’s development efforts. Tanna further urged the community to take advantage of the numerous opportunities created under the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, emphasizing that Uganda remains one of Africa’s most promising destinations for investment, trade, and industrial growth.
“The opportunities are enormous. We should continue working together, supporting one another, and contributing to the development of the country that has given us so much,” he remarked.
Economic Contribution To Uganda
During the celebrations, speakers also highlighted the immense contribution of the Indian community to Uganda’s economy.
Government officials and business leaders have consistently noted that the Asian community, predominantly of Indian origin, contributes an estimated 65 to 70 percent of Uganda’s tax revenues through investments and business enterprises. The community also plays a leading role in key sectors including manufacturing, banking, real estate, hospitality, agriculture, wholesale trade, and industrial development.
Over the decades, Indian-owned enterprises have created thousands of jobs for Ugandans, contributed significantly to industrialization, and supported the country’s economic transformation agenda. Their continued investments have helped position Uganda as a competitive destination for regional and international business.
Tanna commended the Indian community for its longstanding commitment to Uganda’s prosperity, describing it as a strategic partner in the nation’s development journey.
Meanwhile, Shyam Tanna was equally recognized for his dedicated service as newly elected Member of Parliament for Tororo Municipality and for his tireless efforts in championing community development, youth empowerment, and effective representation of his constituents.
Leaders of the Indian Association Uganda hailed both Tanna and Shyam as exemplary leaders whose achievements continue to inspire excellence, patriotism, and public service among Ugandans and members of the Indian diaspora.
The association noted that the success of the two leaders reflects the positive impact of hard work, determination, and a shared commitment to national progress.
As Uganda continues to pursue its development aspirations, the Indian Association Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships, promoting unity, encouraging investment, and supporting initiatives that contribute to the country’s economic growth and social transformation.
The recognition of Hons. Sanjay Tanna and Shyam Tanna stands as a testament to their distinguished leadership, remarkable achievements, and enduring contribution to Uganda’s progress, prosperity, and future development.
