Kampala– Ugandan music star Moses Ssali, alias Bebe Cool, is facing the prospect of a defamation lawsuit after former Miss Rwanda 2016 Jolly Mutesi, through her lawyers led by renowned city lawyer Fred Mukasa Mbidde, threatened legal action over social media posts accusing her of fraud.
In a strongly-worded legal notice titled “Notice of Imminent Legal Proceedings for Defamation, Injurious Falsehood, and Aggravated Publication of False Statements,” Mbidde informed Bebe Cool that his recent publications on X (formerly Twitter) had seriously damaged Mutesi’s reputation and could attract substantial legal consequences if not retracted.
The notice states that Bebe Cool published statements alleging that Mutesi was involved in fraudulent activities against him.
“On or about the 16th day of June 2026 at approximately 23:00 hours, you did, through your verified social media platform (Twitter/X) under the account name ‘Bebe Cool,’ publish statements concerning our Client, alleging that she was implicated in acts of fraud and/or scamming perpetrated against you in or about the year 2025,” reads part of the notice.
Mutesi’s lawyers argue that the allegations are entirely false and were published recklessly without verification.
“The said publication constitutes grossly defamatory material, which is false per se, actuated by express malice, and published in a manner that was reckless, wanton, and in flagrant disregard of the truth or any duty to verify the same,” the lawyers contend.
The legal team further dismissed claims linking Mutesi to a phone number that Bebe Cool publicly shared, insisting that she has never had any connection to it.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Our Client has never at any material time engaged in any dealings, correspondence, or nexus whatsoever with you; the telephone number you purport to attribute to our Client is fraudulent, unauthorized, and bears no nexus whatsoever to her identity and hence your allegations are entirely fictitious, unfounded, and devoid of any evidentiary substratum.”
Mbidde also cited previous public warnings concerning the same phone number, arguing that it had long been flagged as belonging to unknown fraudsters rather than Mutesi.
According to the notice, a social media user identified as Tumwine Daniel publicly warned about the number on October 4, 2024, while Mutesi herself allegedly issued a public advisory a day earlier cautioning the public against imposters misusing her identity.
The lawyers have now demanded that Bebe Cool immediately stops publishing the allegations, issue a full public retraction and apologize, and disclose the sources of the information he relied on.
Failure to comply, the notice warns, will result in immediate court action.
Genesis Of The Dispute
The legal threat stems from a series of explosive posts published by Bebe Cool on his verified X account, where he accused Mutesi of orchestrating a sophisticated scam operation. In one of the posts, the singer claimed:
“This woman @mutesi_jolly stays in the UK and she always watches Arsenal games. She coned me last year in the name of Rwanda, Arsenal football club and now she’s on another big mission. Full story loading…….”
The musician also tagged Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Arsenal Football Club in the post.
In a subsequent and more detailed publication, Bebe Cool alleged that Mutesi had been involved in similar schemes targeting multiple victims and claimed he possessed evidence linking her to the alleged fraud.
He wrote:
“I have way much more than you think, about you and your dark colored girlfriend playing this game for a long time. To make matters worse, I know more people you did this to.”
The singer further claimed: “You have a person in Uganda who has a number and an account you use to receive money.”
Bebe Cool also asserted that he had independently verified Mutesi’s alleged involvement through one of the purported victims and promised to release screenshots to support his claims.
“Tomorrow I will start with the screenshots and let’s see how this situation evolves,” he posted.
Despite those assertions, Mutesi’s legal team maintains that she has never communicated with Bebe Cool and that the allegations are based on mistaken identity or false information.
With neither side backing down, the matter appears destined for a courtroom battle unless a settlement is reached in the coming days.
For now, Bebe Cool remains under pressure to substantiate his allegations or face what could become one of the region’s most closely watched defamation cases involving a celebrity and a former beauty queen.
