Rebecca Nabaggala, the daughter to the former Attorney General, Dr. Kiddu Makubuya has quashed the social media reports that has been taking rounds claiming that he is dead.
Nabaggala who is among other family members attending to him in hospital, has confirmed that her father is still alive.
“We are with our father in hospital. It is sad that people rush to make unqualified statements without reaching out to the family. The medics are attending to him,” she said in a phone interview at 3:30pm.
Her confirmation comes in response to reports claiming that Dr. Kiddu Makubuya had passed away.
The reports of Makubuya’s death were initially broadcast by Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), the state-owned television network. These reports caused widespread concern among the public.
Nabaggala’s reassurance has put to rest the alarming news that had spread rapidly.
Kiddu Makubuya, a prominent Ugandan lawyer, politician, and academician, has had a distinguished career. He served as the Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister from 27 May 2011, replacing Janat Mukwaya. Prior to this, he was Uganda’s Attorney General from 2005 until 2011. His resignation from the cabinet on 16 February 2012 was amid allegations of misappropriation of government funds. Additionally, he represented Katikamu County South in Luweero District as a Member of Parliament.
Born on 30 July 1949, Makubuya holds a First Class Honors Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, a Master of Laws degree, and a Doctor of Juridical Science from Yale Law School. He completed his Diploma in Legal Practice at the Law Development Center and was enrolled as an advocate of the Uganda High Court in 1985.
Beyond his political career, Makubuya has made significant contributions to the legal and academic fields. He began as a special assistant at the Faculty of Law, Makerere University, and progressed to associate professor. He also played a key role in drafting the 1995 Constitution of Uganda as a member of the Uganda Constitutional Commission and served on the Commission of Inquiry into Violations of Human Rights.
Makubuya’s contributions extend to his work as a partner in Kasolo & Khiddu Advocates, a private law firm, and as director of the Uganda Human Rights and Peace Center. His involvement in politics began in 1988, and he held several key ministerial positions, including Minister of Education and Sports and State Minister for Foreign Affairs (International Cooperation).
The erroneous reports of Makubuya’s death highlight the need for careful verification of information before dissemination. The clarification from his daughter has alleviated concerns among those who respect and admire his extensive contributions to Uganda’s legal, academic, and political spheres.
For now, the former Attorney General remains alive, and further updates on his condition will be provided as more information becomes available.
