Depression Can Be Successfully Treated if Recognized Early

Depression affects almost 19 million people each year according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Mental health experts emphasize that depression can be successfully treated with early recognition, intervention, and support.

Depression is a mood disorder causing persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest. It often develops in individuals who have experienced abuse or severe losses, but it can affect anyone. It is characterized by sadness, irritability, and somatic and cognitive changes that significantly impair an individual’s ability to function.

Statistics from the WHO highlight that about 280 million people worldwide suffer from depression, including 5% of the world’s adults and 5.7% of adults over 60 years old. Moreover, an estimated 60% of people with depression do not seek professional support due to stigma.

Dr. Minjo Peter, Founder and Executive Manager of Jinja Recovery Center, pointed out that many men are unaware that physical symptoms such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain can be serious indicators of depression. He noted that men with depression might also experience irritability, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Speaking at the Busoga Health Forum webinar, Dr. Minjo added that untreated depression in men may lead to anger, frustration, and violent behaviors, resulting in dangerous risks such as reckless driving and unsafe sex.

Depression’s physical symptoms also include weight gain or loss, chronic pain, heart disease, sexual health problems, worsening chronic health conditions, and trouble sleeping.

“Many people are depressed but not seeking professional help. We need to check on our family members and friends to help them avoid the worst outcomes of depression,” he emphasized.

Statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health indicate that 90% of people who die by suicide have depression, highlighting the severity of the condition.

Since most people respond best to a combination of psychotherapy and medications, Dr. Minjo reiterated that individuals experiencing symptoms should seek assessment and services from designated centers.

According to a 2020 Ministry of Health report, chronic stress and anxiety are linked to a 30% increase in heart disease among men. Researchers from Harvard Medical School also revealed that chronic stress can lead to hypertension and a weakened immune system.

Positive mental health leads to better coping skills, improved relationships, and higher productivity, making it a priority for both men and women.
