Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy KMP spokesperson has noted that the Territorial Police at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala have successfully rescued a seven-day-old infant, Alyano Gladys, who was abducted on August 6, 2024, from her mother, Mamusena Miriam.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect, identified as Akello Monica, orchestrated the abduction with the assistance of a local leader, Oswal John Elephant. The suspect reportedly lured pregnant women and new mothers by falsely promising financial support from a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). After sending the other women away, Akello targeted Mamusena Miriam, telling her that to receive financial aid, she needed to provide a birth certificate.
Using the pretext of obtaining the certificate, Akello and Mamusena boarded two separate motorbikes, with Akello offering to hold the infant. Shortly thereafter, Akello disappeared with the child.
Thanks to diligent investigative efforts, the police apprehended Akello on August 14, 2024, in Mulimila, Kamwokya Nakawa Division. During interrogation, Akello confessed to the crime, explaining that she stole the baby to deceive her husband, who had been pressuring her to conceive. She admitted to feeding the child with bottled milk since the abduction.
Three suspects are currently in police custody, including the victim’s sister, Akoli Bena, who allegedly aided Akello by identifying the child and reassuring her that Mamusena, due to financial difficulties, would be unable to properly care for the baby.
The infant, Alyano Gladys, has been safely returned to her mother and is awaiting a medical examination. Further details will be provided as they become available.
