Notable changes for Uganda Martyrs ahead of new season

Uganda Martyrs, the team that secured third place in the last two seasons, has revamped its squad in preparation for a title push in the upcoming 2024/2025 season.

The club unveiled one experienced player, promoted four players from their academy, and released five players as part of their strategy to win the title.

A significant leadership change saw Brother Herman Tamale appointed as the new club president, replacing Brother Leonard Kasozi. Edward Ssozi has taken over as head coach, supported by assistant coaches Shaffic Mutebi, Masembe Umar, and goalkeeping coach Ssetuba Andrew.

The club confirmed the departure of five players: Nakacwa Kevin, Stella Namisango, Nagudi Shakira, Shamusa Najjuma, and Nalumu Sumaiya.

They also announced the arrival of seasoned player Nuru Nakyanzi and promoted four academy players to the senior team: defender Comfort Aculu, midfielder Hilda Nakirijja, winger Rashida Nakalema, and defender Halima Kizza.

Head coach Edward Ssozi emphasized the importance of bringing experienced players like Nuru to the squad. “Nuru brings valuable expertise, complementing our talented young players.”

“We’ve been relying on our students, but adding seasoned players like Nuru gives us the experience we need,” Ssozi remarked.

The team’s relocation to NEC Grounds, Bugolobi, raised some concerns, but Ssozi remained confident, stating, “NEC Grounds is like a home away from home. It won’t affect our performance as some may think.”

He also highlighted the financial support from NEC, which has helped strengthen the squad. “NEC’s financial backing has enabled us to sign quality players and promote junior talent. We’ve not been financially stable, but their support is a big boost for us this season.”

Driven by the determination to overcome their third-place jinx, Uganda Martyrs has implemented strategic changes aimed at claiming the championship. “We’ve been knocking on the door for too long. This season, we’re all in for the title,” Ssozi asserted.

The official team unveiling ceremony took place in the presence of students, who are considered the club’s number one fans.

The team also confirmed that they would play their first-round games at NEC Grounds while St. Gerald Stadium undergoes renovations, as stated by club CEO Freda Ayerango.

“We chose to unveil the squad in front of our students because they are our foundation. With St. Gerald Stadium under renovation, we’ll host all first-round games at NEC Grounds,” Ayerango said.

Team captain Latifah Nakasi promised to lead Uganda Martyrs to victory and personally set a goal to claim the golden boot with 12 goals this season.

“We’re ready to win. Changing grounds won’t affect our strategy. I’m aiming for the golden boot with 12 goals, starting with our game against She Corporates on Saturday.”

Uganda Martyrs will face She Corporates on Sunday, September 29th, at NEC Grounds, Bugolobi. Latifah Nakasi will captain the team, supported by vice-captains Gloria Namugerwa and Immaculate Nakanjako.
