Preview: KCCA Aims to Build on Strong Start

KCCA will look to continue their impressive start to the Uganda Premier League season when they visit Bright Stars at Kavumba, with hopes of maintaining their push for the top of the table.

The Lugogo-based side has impressed so far, securing a 2-0 win against Kitara, which followed a draw away to BUL and a victory over URA. These results have earned KCCA seven points, placing them second in the standings.

Their recent triumph over Kitara was particularly significant, as Kitara had beaten KCCA both home and away last season and knocked them out of the FUFA Super 8 earlier this year.

The 2-0 victory was a satisfying response after pre-match comments from KCCA head coach Abdallah Mubiru, who downplayed Kitara as a “small team just on form.” His side backed up those words with a confident display.

A win against Bright Stars on Wednesday would temporarily lift KCCA to the top of the table ahead of current leaders NEC, who hold nine points and are scheduled to face Express on Thursday.

However, the task at Kavumba will not be easy. Bright Stars have proven to be a tough opponent for KCCA, especially at home.

KCCA has not won at Kavumba in their last three visits, with their last victory there dating back to 2020.

In that game, goals from Brian Aheebwa and Sam Ssenyonjo secured a 2-1 win, with Bright Stars’ Joseph Akandwanaho scoring in a losing effort.

Last season, after Coach Mubiru had steadied the ship after a dreadful start to the season, and KCCA had climbed their way back into the title talk, all this was ended by a 2-2 draw at Kavumba with a club twice coming from down to rescue a point.

Bright Stars have had a slow start to the season, managing only two points from their opening three matches. After a 1-1 draw with Wakiso Giants, they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to URA and were held to another 1-1 draw by Police.

Despite their struggles, Bright Stars coach Joseph Mutyaba is confident his team will rise to the occasion against KCCA, promising a competitive showing on home turf.
