Take precautions before eye pressure causes vision loss
Glaucoma, commonly known as eye pressure, is a serious eye disease that can lead to permanent vision loss if the necessary treatments are not applied or are delayed. Sharing that glaucoma does not cause many symptoms in the early stages, Anadolu Health Center Hospital Ophthalmologist Op. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz said, “Most types of glaucoma do not cause pain and do not even cause any symptoms until vision loss. “Regular eye examination is the only way to detect glaucoma before permanent vision loss occurs.”
Anadolu Health Center Hospital Ophthalmology Specialist Op explains that glaucoma is defined as damage to the optic nerves as a result of the fluid pressure inside the eye rising to levels much higher than normal. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz warned, “Factors such as being in your 40s, having a family history of glaucoma, having trouble focusing in your eyes, cortisone use, thin corneal structure, circulatory disorders, diabetes, hypertension and migraine predispose to glaucoma.”
If treatment is delayed, vision loss cannot be reversed.
Ophthalmologist Op. emphasizes that the treatment of glaucoma, that is, eye tension, varies depending on the patient’s condition and the level of the disease. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz said, “Although they vary depending on the conditions, the most common treatment options are; medicine, laser and surgery. In some cases, not one of these options is selected and they are applied together. The main goal of treatment is to stop the progression of the disease and protect the patient from vision loss. Therefore, if treatment is delayed, vision loss cannot be reversed,” he said.
If the drops do not work, surgery is resorted to.
Op says that the most common treatment method for glaucoma is medication, that is, eye drops. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz said, “The aim here is to prevent damage to the optic nerves by reducing high intraocular pressure. Using eye drops is a treatment method that will work if applied consistently and with discipline, so patients need to be educated and well warned on this subject in order to correctly understand the importance and seriousness of the issue. “In cases where drug treatment is insufficient and there is progress despite drug treatment, surgical method can be used,” he said.
