Government, civil society and UN agencies have bid farewell to the outgoing UN Resident Coordinator Uganda. Ms. Susan Ngongi Namondo whose tenure ended.
During a farewell dinner held at Sheraton Hotel Kampala, Uganda Human Rights Commission chairperson, Mariam Wangadya hailed Namondo for her work in championing human rights.
“You championed a Uganda where every individual could feel a little more visible, heard, and respected. You did it all with a rare blend of determination and diplomacy, navigating even the toughest issues with grace and always with a smile.”
Wangadya said during her tenure, Namondo reminded everyone of the power of a development partner who is both fierce in advocacy and warm in friendship.
“You have shown us that when human rights are protected, communities thrive. Your unwavering belief in a better future gave us hope and inspiration. As you move on to Tanzania, know that you leave behind a legacy that will continue to inspire us.”
Speaking on behalf of civil society, Francis Xavier Ejoyi, Action Aid International Uganda Country Director hailed Namondo for valuing the role of civil society as essential to the development of Uganda.
“On behalf of civil society, I want to thank you, Susan, for living out the core values of the United Nations with integrity and impact. We remember and are grateful for your dedication to women’s rights and for taking a strong, unwavering stance against violence toward women,” Ejoyi said.
“You truly embodied the UN’s values, not only in your role as Resident Coordinator but also in your partnership with us. You were down-to-earth and approachable, showing compassion and warmth to everyone you met. You inspired us all, no matter your stature, with a kindness and dedication that were felt across Uganda’s civil society.”
The former UNICEF country representative, Munir Safieldin hailed Namondo for uniting the UN family in Uganda.
“The arrival of Suzan as the UN Resident Coordinator marked a very special and important turning point for the UN family in Uganda. By the time she arrived, the team needed someone to bring it together,” Safieldin said.
In her speech, Ms Namondo applauded the Ugandan government for the positive and constructive relationship with her and the entire UN family.
“We have shared ideas on the development trajectory. I thank all partners for collaboration. I have enjoyed my time in Uganda and I hope I will use my experience got here where I am going,” Namondo said.
She will soon be starting work as the UN Resident Coordinator in Tanzania where she has been posted.
