The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced changes to the schedule for the nomination of presidential candidates and Members of Parliament (MPs) ahead of the 2025 general elections.
According to Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, Chairperson of the IEC, the nomination of presidential candidates will now take place earlier than initially planned, on September 23rd–24th, 2025, instead of the previously scheduled October 2nd–3rd, 2025.
In line with the changes, presidential campaigns will officially commence on September 29th, 2025, instead of the earlier date of October 4th, 2025.
The nomination of Members of Parliament has also been rescheduled from October 15th–16th to October 22nd–23rd, 2025. Justice Byabakama explained that this shift was necessary because Uganda will be hosting the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit during the initial nomination period. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the change, citing the involvement of ministers and legislators some of whom are candidates in the summit.
The announcement was made on Friday during the handover ceremony of the Commission’s newly proposed permanent home, constructed by Housing and Construction Company Ltd., located at Lweza Lubowa along Entebbe Road. The venue will host the upcoming presidential nominations.
The event was attended by several high-profile figures, including the Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, and the CEO of the National Housing and Construction Company Ltd., Kenneth Kaijuki.
In his remarks, Gen. Katumba Wamala congratulated the Commission on acquiring its new home, emphasizing its strategic location and improved facilities. He noted that the new site will serve as the presidential nomination venue and the in the forthcoming elections. He also highlighted the logistical advantages over previous venues like Kyambogo and Namboole.
Meanwhile, Kenneth Kaijuki confirmed that construction works at the new facility were executed in phases to support uninterrupted electoral activities. “The work is done in phases to ensure the smooth running of electoral activities until its final completion after the election,” he said.
