The flag-off ceremony was held on Wednesday at the university’s main campus in Nkozi, where Vice Chancellor Prof. Patrick Edwin Kyamanywa officially sent off four teams; football, rugby, basketball and tennis to represent the institution at the national university games.

Addressing the athletes, Prof. Kyamanywa urged them to uphold discipline and remain steadfast to the core values of Uganda Martyrs University throughout the competition. He said the university leadership had full confidence in the selected teams, noting that management’s decision to field them was based on trust in their ability and preparedness.

Special praise was reserved for the football and rugby teams, who travel to Mukono as defending champions. The Vice Chancellor challenged both teams to maintain their winning tradition and defend their titles with pride and professionalism.

Prof. Kyamanywa also assured the teams of full institutional backing, revealing that the university management, through Unitas, has fully funded and supported the teams’ participation and remains ready to provide any additional support needed during the games.

The Acting Sports Tutor, Mr. Orom Henry, echoed the call for discipline and focus, advising players to keep their minds firmly on the competition at all times. He emphasized the importance of teamwork and concentration as key ingredients for success at the games.

Turning to the tennis team, which is making its debut at the AUUS Games, Mr. Orom encouraged the players to learn from the more experienced teams and to compete in a manner that reflects the standards and expectations of the university.

With intensive training and strong team cohesion reported in the build-up to the tournament, the UMU delegation is optimistic about its medal prospects. “We are eyeing gold across the board, and we believe this will be achieved through the hard training and teamwork that has characterized our preparations,” a team official noted.

The UMU teams are scheduled to depart from Nkozi on Thursday ahead of the opening of the 2025 AUUS Games in Mukono.
