Kampala University (KU) women’s handball team announced their intentions at the 2025 Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Games with a commanding 28–17 victory over Nkumba University, setting an early marker in the championship.

KU were dominant for large spells of the contest, using pace and improved coordination to pull away after a tricky opening phase. Nkumba’s man-to-man defence briefly unsettled KU, but the university side adjusted quickly to take firm control and secure a convincing opening win.

Speaking after the match, KU captain Harriet Nakirijja expressed satisfaction with the performance but warned tougher challenges lie ahead.

“I’m happy that we have won our first game. It was a fair game, neither tough nor easy, but we managed it well,” Nakirijja said.

“They came with a man-to-man approach and disorganized us so much at the beginning. However, we realized it and raised our speed to beat it.

After this tie against Nkumba, there is another hard task ahead and that’s Makerere University. We are prepared to face the best if we are to win anything from this championship.”

Elsewhere on the opening days, Victoria University delivered the most emphatic women’s result with a crushing 40–09 win over Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), underlining their attacking firepower.

In the men’s category, Makerere University swept past hosts Uganda Christian University (UCU) with a dominant 41–11 victory, while Ndejje University showcased their depth and consistency by registering two successive wins. Ndejje first outclassed Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) 53–34 before overpowering Kampala University 49–31 in a thrilling morning encounter.

The most tightly contested fixture of the day came in the women’s category, where hosts UCU edged Makerere University 21–20 in a nail-biting clash that kept fans on edge until the final whistle.

With several fixtures still pending, the early rounds have already highlighted strong contenders, competitive rivalries, and the promise of an exciting handball championship as the AUUS Games continue.
