MASINDI PREGNANT WOMEN ABANDON HEALTH CENTERS FOR TRADITIONAL BIRTH ATTENDANTS

Laureen Atyeno the incharge Kirasa health centre 2 in Central division Masindi Municipality has expressed fear on increased number of pregnant women neglecting health centres to go for antinentals in favour of Traditional birth attendants.

Atyeno revealed that according to the survey conducted, they found that community is lagging behind certain services especially youth due to ignorance.

Atyeno adds that, Kirasa health centre ii provides almost 80% of the services such as reproductive health especially on maternal, youth friendly services, HIV testing and counseling, out patient etc but mothers don’t make use of these instead hide themselves in the communities with others being ignorant about the services and prompting some to seek for services of traditional birth attendants.

“Am worried about the increased numbers of expectant mothers who have neglected their roles of going for antinentals as well as maternity services in favour of Traditional birth attendants, am not stopping you From going to them, but we are trained and have special knowledge in managing certain things compared to them, we are after protecting the future and having health community” Atyeno stressed.

Atyeno adds that mothers are dieing in the communities in attempt to abort since they don’t want to seek services from health facilities where experts can guide them on where necessary and others due to the myths .

“I encourage mothers to embrace antinental visits during your pregnancies for wellbeing of your babies and yourselves” Atyeno Asserted.

Atyeno raised the concern during community engagement organised by Alpha action for social economic development an NGO on Tuesday at Kigulya Division headquarters.

At the same engagement, Winfred Kutegeka, Kigulya Division chairperson observed that many men have abandoned their duties as heads of families living women and children to struggle without adequate support.

He says the situation has contributed to domestic instabilities, school drop out and rising poverty levels saying men have critical roles to play in improving family welfare including providing basic needs.

Kutegeka warned that continued neglect of those responsibilities could undermine community development effort thus calling upon local and religious leaders to play role in senstizing both men and women on sharing family responsibilities.

Christine Kasangaki working with Alpha action for economic development in the department of monitoring and evaluation revealed that the engagement intended o give youth and mothers knowledge about reproductive health rights to enable them make informed decision regarding their health and wellbeing.

The participants hailed the organisers for coming up with the initiative saying it has widened their knowledge on reproductive health rights something they had no I dea about before.
